Affiliate Niche Script Beta Released!

Today is a big day for us, affiliate niche script has finally reached beta after 11 long months of development!

It’s not too late to become a beta tester, simply email us: admin [at] affiliatenichescript.com.

We will shortly be hosting a demo site to see the script running hands on.

Fortnightly Update #5

It’s that time again, our bi-monthly update!

Hopefully this will be the last update before we can start rolling out beta copies of the script to testers.

Lots of updates and enhancements have been made since our last update, a summary of what we have done is below:

  • RSS Feeds improved
  • option added to price tracking so users can set a time limit in days to track for
  • new seo feature added which allows you to change the url structure by changing the order to various values like category, asin, title…
  • Product name length is now configurable for both urls and page text.
  • All reference of Amazon can now be removed and replaced with your site name for reviews.
  • the number of pages for search results, reviews and offers can now be configured.
  • New admin dashboard implemented. Gives you a great overview of recent activity and the status of your store.
  • Narrow by Brand & Price range options added to categories in US locale.
  • each category can now have its own default sorting order for product listings
  • New template engine added along with a new default template
  • Lots more enhancements, bug fixes and code cleanup for beta preparation.

The next stage will be for me to some tests installing the script on various hosts and on different operating systems, once this is complete and no major bugs are found then a beta will be released to all those that have sent a request.

Homepage update and beta signup

This is a quick update to let you know we have updated the main homepage: http://www.affiliatenichescript.com/ with  a progress report and beta signup form.

We expect to be able to start beta testing the application in the next 3-4 weeks. If you would like to signup then please goto our homepage and fill in the form. Please give a little detail of your experience and what alternative Amazon scripts you have tried or are currently using.

I will be posting the next fornightly development update in the next day or so.

Fortnightly Update #4

Ok, since my last fornightly update we have made a lot of progress with the script. Also we have rebranded the script to now be called “Affiliate Niche Script”.

I did mention in a previous post that we had decided to not add any new features and only focus on bugs, well sorry but I failed, but you will LOVE the new features!!

So here is the summary of what I have been up to since our last update:

New Features:-

  • Category level min/max price filtering
  • Custom templates can be created for specific ASIN or Category
  • Added MP3 Player widget for MP3 products
  • added functionality to item pages so you can choose various options for certain items before adding to cart, like item size, color etc…
  • Created a user area, users can register/login to the site.
  • Added “Save for Later” bookmark feature for logged in users.
  • Added Price Tracking Alerts, customer can specify a product and will be emailed when the price drops!
  • Implemented “Amazon Complete” for search field, similar to google suggest but keywords are returned direct from Amazon so they are relevant to shopping items.
  • Searches are now recorded in the database for tracking
  • Search cloud template function added showing the most popular search terms on your site

Improvements/Bug Fixes:

  • Item/Cart tracking can now be enabled/disabled.
  • fixed issue where if shopping cart is disabled, direct links weren’t pointing to the correct url
  • fixed bug where if last item was removed from cart, the mini cart total would not update
  • Lots more error checking added.
  • Many more various minor bugs fixed

Well as you can see, I have been very busy since our last update. I am continuing at a great pace and may even be in the position to require some beta testers soon!

I think the price tracking feature is going to be our unique selling point, no other script has this feature yet. I have even found if useful myself. When I first added the feature to ANS I added loads of products to my account to test it out, the following day I received emails with lots of price alerts, I was actually amazed at how often Amazon do change their prices!

Of course there are websites tracking Amazon prices, but you have never been able to run your own. This will added lots of value to your store as it will attract repeat visitors, also as users register you build up an email list will be extremely valuable to you.

Thanks for reading and I will update you again in a fortnights time!

Important Update

I have decided now, rather than later to change the name and home domain of the upcoming release to Affiliate Niche Script (http://www.affiliatenichescript.com). I think the name suit’s the product much better, as Amazon have recently re-branded their affiliate program to Amazon Product API from Amazon Associates.

I will begin the transfer of the domain sometime this week, all links will automatically re-direct to the new domain so you do not need to update your bookmarks.

Fortnightly Update #3

Hi,

I have not been able to get much done in the past few weeks as I have been on holiday and generally taking a break from developing ANS for a week or two. I am now ready to contiune at full pace!

A few changes since last update are:

  • Added Amazon Auto Suggest for search box
  • Improved search functionality
  • Added lots more options to the admin pages
  • Lots more bug fixes

In addition to updating the script I have been “checking out the competition” by looking at the features already available to make sure I have covered most stuff in this product. I have also been digging around some “featured requests” and “wishlist” posts to see what customers really want. I was quite surprised to see our the ANS feature list covered most of the requests, and those that weren’t covered have been added to our “TODO” list for future releases.

The main areas of focus for the next fortnight are to complete RSS functionality, improve the template system and then finish the installer.

Once the installer has been finished, I can then do some real testing on various environments etc…

Fortnightly update #2

Development is still going at a good pace, below is a summary of some of the updates since our last update:-

  • We decided to add loads more ajax rather than just have an ajax shopping cart. Browsing products, offers, reviews and all paging is now fully working with ajax.  Additional code was also updated to allow the store to work even if the user does not have javascript support or if it is disabled. If javascript is disabled then query or seo urls will take effect.
  • We have updated our DB class to use ADODB. This took quite so time to migrate but we felt it was better to implement it now rather than after general release. The benefit of using ADODB is faster data access, better caching of common queries and also the ability to in the future “maybe” add support for additional database types. At the moment we are using MySQL only but we recognise some users may prefer SQLite or MSSQL.
  • Major work has begun on the admin backend and we are trying to sort out some minor techincal difficulties which would effectively give you guys a “kick ass” feature which I am sure you will love, I am very suprised it has not been done by any of our competitors yet.
  • Some work has begun on the installer. We had a clever idea which enables users who switch from Associate-O-Matic to simply upload their existing cfg.saved.php config file, our installer will read the configuration from this file and setup your new ANS store automatically with the same categories and settings!! We have not decided to include this in the installer or admin area yet as we are trying to keep the installer quick & simple.

Well, that’s about it for this update, we will be back around the end of September for the next update.

We really need to get started getting the word out about ANS soon as nobody is reading these updates :( (

Fortnightly update #1

Ok, I am going to start pushing out fortnightly updates to keep you up to date with the progress of Associates Niche Store.

The past few weeks have seen me spend about 6 hours a day coding, that’s a lot of time when I also have a full-time job.

I will be taking a two day break this weekend to relax and gather thought’s about what’s to develop on the script.

So, here are just a few things which I have added/fixed or changed to the script:

  • Added caching of Amazon XML data – This can be turned on or off and cache will last for one hour. I have seen great speed improvements with this, there’s no real reason to switch it off so I may choose to have it enabled by default.
  • Enabled http compression – Enabling this is amazing, instant noticable results. Pages load up to 4x quicker than with no compression.
  • Added “tracking” – I can’t really expose any more details just yet as we want to keep some features secret before launch!
  • Ajax shopping cart fully completed.
  • Custom reviews feature added. Also some great tricks added to make Amazon reviews more useful.
  • MySQL database query caching functions added.
  • Work begun on ANS backend “admin area” – This is about 50% complete, many more configurable options still need to be added. No support for non US stores will be available just yet.
  • Fully completed Amazon Product API signed request updates.

What’s left and when will it be released!??!

The dev code is from today feature frozen. I will only be finishing/expanding existing features. Main areas of development left are theming, backend, installer and error handling.

Although as previously stated I said I was about 80% completed before general release, the remaining 20% of development could take me a further 2-3 months. Further updates will hopefully give you a more acurate time.

Back to work, and you will hear from me in another fortnight!
